Speak Your Way To Success in IELTS?

The most important aspect of the IELTS test is the aspect of Speaking. There is a famous quotation called, “Speech is silver”. (learn to get through your IELTS speaking test. IELTS Speaking test tips and tricks are shared here in this article).

Speaking determines our ability to put forth our thought process and get it evaluated and monitored. Primarily, the IELTS aspirant has to tune himself to everything British. Watching BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) channel and reading books from the British Council Library would help the aspirant in familiarizing himself/ herself with the finer aspects of British culture.

A very interesting way of broadening one’s speaking abilities is to participate in various social media discussions and conversations. Some notable points to remember are:

Expand one’s knowledge horizon: This means to listen to good conversations and good conversationalists. In order to improve one’s speaking abilities; speak to a person who is really well versed in language and rich in the use of vocabulary. This will help the aspirant gain knowledge on the correct use of words. Timely response will help the aspirant gain a firm control on his use of words and vocabulary. Another important thing to remember is to converse with a person who has almost the same level of intelligence as the aspirant. Otherwise, ego clashes may arise.

The Power of Repetition: Repetition drills concepts into the mind of a person. Repeatedly, learning something helps one remember well and reproduce it at any given time. Confidence building measures can be adopted. Some of them are to view short talks on any topics, small speeches and formal or informal discussions on any given topic at hand.

Try to reproduce some phrases being said by the person, but do not try to imitate the speaking style as this may not be successful at all times. For a good beginning there can be short talks on any given subject and slowly increased in frequency and length. Another very important thing is that the aspirant should necessarily focus on aspects such as stressing on words, rhythm, intonation.

If the statement is a question, it should sound like one. Rhythm means to have a pleasant way of speaking, (not to have a sing song like voice as the name suggests). Intonation is the aspect of speaking in the correct tone of voice. If the given topic is a happy one then the speaker should be pleasant, if it is a speech then it should have a generous mix of a serious tone, wit and laughter. These aspects are also a great aid in improving one’s fluency of the English Language in general.

The By Hearting Disaster: In the Indian context, speeches are always by hearted. But one needs to understand that memorizing cannot help always. If a part of the speech is forgotten, then it sounds very abrupt and unnatural. Speaking naturally helps build confidence and assertiveness, thereby making the individual develop his/her distinct personality. The examiner will not have a good impression on the candidate if memorized speeches are rendered. A good practice can be made with comrades before presenting on the final day.

Avoid Nervousness: Do not end up as a nervous wreck. Relax yourself before speaking and use facial expression at times when required. Appear natural to the examiner and face him/her with a smile. This helps control nervousness and makes you be more confident in approach.
