The Use of Countable and Uncountable Nouns In English

Many of the candidates do not make use of Countable and Uncountable Nouns in English in a proper way.

Use of such nouns is simple. One just needs to know the basic differences. Anyone who has acquired English may make use of these nouns less seriously and may go wrong. But, people who learn English, use these nouns as per the grammar rules.

There are some nouns in English that are uncountable. They will have just one form that is Singular Form. They do not have Plural Form. Nor are they used as Plural in any sentence. Listed down are a few of the Uncountable Nouns that can’t be made Plural.

  • There is no truth in it.
  • He has good knowledge of robotics.
  • Food is stale.
  • There is no entertainment in his life.

Remember, if the noun is Uncountable Noun, then it can’t be used with a plural verb.

Wrong Sentence: There were many happiness in life.

Right Sentence: There was happiness in his life.

Wrong Sentence: There were many foods in the basket

Right Sentence: There was food in the basket.

Noun-Verb Agreement

It is very important that the NOUN shall be used in agreement with the right VERB.

Wrong Sentence: There is BOYS in the room.

Right Sentence: There are BOYS in the room.

Wrong Sentence: There are some foods in the kitchen.

Right Sentence: There is some food in the kitchen.
