Many non-native English speakers are nervous when signing up for the IELTS as they assume that it is very difficult to score a band 9 in the assessment. Although the IELTS does use some advanced vocabulary in its reading section, it is nothing that cannot be mastered with practice and some learning tips.

IELTS Reading consists of 40 multiple choice questions and 3 reading essays. These texts, which range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical, are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. In these questions, you have to identify statements that are false or true, match information and headings. Additionally, you have to complete flow charts and label diagrams based on the information given in the texts.

Due to the complexity of the tasks, many find the reading section daunting and some are unable to complete it in the given time limit.

So, we have compiled a few tips for you to make your IELTS experience easier:

So, make sure that you read through your written answers that to ensure that you have not misspelled any of the words. Additionally, make sure you use correct punctuation.

Read the questions carefully: Before you start reading the texts, go over the questions so you know what to look out for when reading the texts.

Underline as you read: When you read the questions, you know what to look for in the text and where. So, grab a pen and underline every time you see a possible answer or an important phrase.

Cross out wrong answers: When you start answering the MCQ’s make sure to eliminate all the wrong answers and this will help you choose the correct answers faste.

Skim the text: You cannot spend time reading the entire text, you will have to skim through and start looking for answers.

Read up on vocabulary: Before you attempt the test make sure that you read magazines and newspapers to update your vocabulary. This will help you when you answer the reading section tasks.

Practice mock tests: Finally, practice makes perfect so, make sure you go over mock tests and sample questions while timing yourself.
