Marking Criteria in IELTS Speaking?
Are you ready for the IELTS speaking? Before you take the test, it is always important to understand the Marking Criteria. If you know how your speaking skills are assessed, it will be easy for you to get a higher score in your test.
Marking Criteria in IELTS Speaking
There are five major factors that will affect your score. They are as follows:
- English Fluency
- Cohesion
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Pronunciation
Let us discuss each of these in detail.
English Fluency
How can we define fluency? What actually is it? In the general sense of the word, it means speaking with no breaks or hesitation. But, it doesn’t mean that you should speak fast. Remember, to be able to score higher in your IELTS Speaking test, you will have to speak clearly, distinctly and with proper speed. You do not have to speak fast or speak too slowly. Speak as naturally as you can.
Cohesion
Is what you are saying meaningful? Are you giving the correct answers? When you are asked to talk about your favorite historical monument in your city, you can’t speak about any other thing like why do you love the city, etc. Your answer needs to be very precise. You will have to learn how to give proper answers. Often, students do not get a good score in IELTS speaking because they do not answer the question properly. So, learn to master the art of answering the questions correctly.
Grammar
Grammar is the backbone of the language. It has to be perfect. So, be careful when you speak. Even a small error can lead to trouble. Pay attention to creating correct sentences. It is suggested that you should make use of only small or simple sentences. By doing so, you will not make any mistake.
Vocabulary
What type of words are you using? Are you using formal English? Are you using informal English? Or are you using Slang? The words you make use of matter a lot. You are expected to make use of formal, semi-formal vocabulary or informal-vocabulary. But, do not use slang. Do not reply with “yay” or “nah.” It is always good to say “yes,” or “no.” Pick words wisely. Words that are effective can help you get a good score in your IELTS.
Pronunciation
Are you mimicking? Are you trying to speak like a foreigner? Is your pronunciation not natural? Correct pronunciation is very important. Pronounce words with no mistake. Use either UK pronunciation or US pronunciation. It is always good to speak in your own accent.
