Can You Locate The Verbs

Use of proper verbs is very important in IELTS writing. A small mistake can change the meaning of the sentence.

Check out sentences given below:

Sentence 1: I met Ronny every day.

Sentence 2: I meet Ronny every day.

Sentences 1 and 2 use two different forms of verbs. Met (Past Tense) and Meet (Present Tense).

If you are describing an action that is in the present, then you will have to use “Meet” and not “Met.”

Similarly, use of singular verb and plural verb is also very confusing for many candidates. They wrongly use them.

Example 1: Martha and Elena has two days to prepare for the exams (Incorrect).

Example 2: Martha and Elena have two days to prepare for the exams (Correct)

Example 2 is correct (Because, there are two people. So, “Have” will be used and not “Has.”)

Use of correct verb forms

If you would like to make your essay more convincing and impressive then it is essential that you should make it grammatically correct.  Bad grammar is a serious thing when it comes to IELTS writing.

It is possible that the examiner may not mark you down for the inappropriate choice of words (though it is also one of the criteria for the good score in IELTS) but you will not be forgiven for the bad grammar especially connected to verb forms. So, make sure that you use the right forms of the verbs.

Tips and Tricks

One of the easiest ways to avoid mistakes related to different forms of verbs is the use of simple sentences. Avoid making use of more complex sentences. Double check singulars or plurals in your sentences.

Example:

Incorrect: One of the main reasons for the students to stage a protest at the entrance of the university gate are that the university denied permission to hold any event for the next three months.

Correct: One of the main reasons for the students to stage a protest at the entrance of the university gate is that the university denied permission to hold any event for the next three months.
