Different Types Of Questions in IELTS Reading?

It is important to prepare for the IELTS Reading. Do not assume that it is going to be simple. Of course, for those who practice, it is a piece of cake but for candidates who do not practice enough before taking the test, it can be very challenging.

The test will have 40 different questions that are designed to test a wide range of reading skills of the test takers.

You will have to be good at reading, understanding the gist, analyzing the main ideas present in the paragraph or the passage. You should be good at skimming, reading more tactfully with the goal to understand and save time too. You will have to look for the logical reasons, the real purpose of the given passage, the attitude, the opinions or the views of the writer.

An hour is certainly not enough if you follow common reading rules. Here, in IELTS reading, you will have to be smart enough to look for the answers and that too without wasting the time. So, you should be good at skimming and scanning the text with all intelligence.

When it comes to the IELTS Academic test you will receive three long texts. These can be descriptive, discursive, narrative or factual in nature. The passages are selected keeping in mind the required level of academic reading at a university level (that is necessary for the people who are seeking admission in foreign universities or those who are looking for professional qualifications).

Types of Questions

True, False, Not Given

The sentence given as a question may either be true or false. That is the usual case. And in some cases, you may get the sentence as a question that is not there in the passage.

Paragraph Headings

You need to find out the proper heading for the paragraph given in the passage or the headings for the respective paragraphs. There can be choices for you to pick from.

Multiple Choice & Scanning

Generally, you get three or four choices. But, there will be only one correct answer. You need to pick the correct one.

Sentence Completion

There will be incomplete sentences given to you as a question and you will have to complete the sentences by making use of the words from the paragraph or the passage itself. (or in some cases, using words or phrases as needed).

Guessing meaning from context

There can be a word or a phrase given to you as a question and you will have to give the meaning of that word or phrase (focusing more on the context in which it is used).

Short Answer Questions

You will receive questions based on the passage and you will be required to give the answers by making use of not more than 2-3 words or in some cases 3-4 words.

Gapped Summary

There will be an incomplete summary and you will have to supply the missing words or the phrases to complete the summary.

Matching Paragraph Headings

This will be similar to that of the paragraph headings.

Labeling Diagram

You may get a diagram to label with the answers. But, it is not common.
